Ace Speedway is a 4/10 (.400) mile oval stock car racing track in Altamahaw, NC.
Southern Speedway opened in 1956 when Roy Madren carved a 1/3 mile dirt track out of a plot of land near the Altamahaw waterfall in northwestern Alamance County. Local heroes were developed and rivalries were created. Southern Speedway, Southern International Speedway, Southern International Raceway or Ace Speedway. whatever is was called at the time, continued as one of the most storied dirt tracks in the southeast and somewhere along the way, Ace Speedway became the lasting name. In 1984, the track underwent improvements and expanded to become a 3/8 mile track. In 1990, under the leadership Fred & Jim Turner, Ace Speedway saw it’s first major transition as it was paved and then became sanctioned under the NASCAR Winston Racing Series weekly banner. Ace saw new local drivers develop and some of those drivers became Regional champions, and one went on to capture the National NASCAR Championship in1993 Barry Beggarly At the end of 1998, new owner David Morton, undertook a $600,000 expansion and renovation project. The track was lengthened to 4/10 mile, completely repaved, and the turns changed to 12 degrees of banking. Many additions, such as a new scoreboard, bleachers and new concession stand were completed for the 1999 season. In 2007 the track was sold for the 4th time to Pennsylvania investor Abraham sssss. He would be an absentee owner and in 2017, former competitors and father and son, Robert and Jason Turner would aquire the facility. In late 2024, General Manager, and former Ace racer, David Sell came on board to see the day-to-day operations. 2025 promises to be a great year with the return of the NASCAR sanction and the addition of the INEX Legends, along with the returning divisions: Late Models, Limiteds, Modifieds, Mini Stocks, Xtremes and Champ Karts.
